Telford is thinking about erected a new memorial to act as a focus point for commemorative events. It is still early days yet in discussions but they hope to have it built in time for the Royal British Legion’s 2011 annual conference which is being held in Telford.
I find it fascinating that there is still this desire to remember and commemorate. After the Second World War the cry of ‘anything but monuments’ was being voiced but now there is a desire for monuments. Is it because we are being reminded of the cost of war and are entering a new era of commemoration? Or are veterans worried that their sacrifice is being forgotten as their ranks become fewer in number and there are no monuments to reflect their service? What do you think?
